Neck lump – When to seek medical advice urgently

a woman feeling her neck

Seek medical advice urgently for a neck lump if

The lump is growing rapidly. A neck lump that is rapidly increasing in size could be a sign of worsening infection or a tumour.

There is increasing pain. A lump that is painful or tender to the touch, especially if the skin over the lump is red and swollen, may be a sign of an infection or abscess (collection of pus). This may require antibiotics or surgical drainage.

Swallowing or breathing is becoming difficult. If the lump is causing difficulty swallowing or breathing, this is serious and requires immediate medical attention.

There is persistent fever. If you have a fever that persists for more than a few days, it could be a sign of infection or inflammation that is not settling.

There are other symptoms such as weight loss, night sweats, or fatigue. These symptoms could be a sign of a more serious condition and you should seek medical attention immediately.

The lump doesn’t go away. A neck lump that does not go away within two weeks could be serious and needs to be checked medically.
