What is an ENT Emergency?

An ENT emergency is an ear, nose, or throat condition that arises rather suddenly. It causes distress or concern and needs urgent treatment.

ENT emergencies can be frightening. Most ENT emergencies are not life-threatening but can be in certain situations, particularly if there is heavy bleeding in small children, or difficulty or noisy breathing.


Common ENT Emergencies

  • Sudden hearing loss

  • Ear pain (otalgia)

  • Vertigo

  • Sore throat

  • Acute infections of the ears, nose, throat or neck

  • Foreign body in the ears

  • Foreign body in the nose

  • Foreign body in the throat

  • Nosebleed

  • Difficulty breathing or noisy breathing

  • Facial pain

  • Facial weakness

  • Trauma to the nose

  • Trauma to the ear drum

  • Lacerations (cuts) of the ear and nose
